Modern technology with an
experienced and caring team.

Open MRI machineMRI allows physicians to see inside the body without surgery or the use of ionizing radiation. Using a powerful but harmless magnet, low-intensity radio waves and computer technology, MRI creates detailed images of soft tissues, muscles, nerves and bones. This progressive technology, which produces high-resolution images, enables physicians to detect developing diseases or abnormalities earlier. Our MRI services are accredited by the American College of Radiology.

Open MRI Imaging can provide quality imaging for patients and can offer a comforting environment for individuals that are claustrophobic as well as those patients with larger frames.

Ferromagnetic metal objects implanted in the body may be harmful due to the strong magnetic field used for the MRI. A technologist will review with the patient a list of questions to ensure it is safe to proceed with the exam. Patients that have pacemakers are not able to have an MRI. In most cases, after 6 weeks implants including metal plates, pins, screws or surgical staples pose no risk when having an MRI. However, it is important to inform the technologist of any surgical implants. Patients who have had any wounds involving bullets, BB's or shrapnel may need to have an x-ray to detect where any such metal object(s) may be. Patients are asked to remove anything that may affect the quality of the MRI images including hairpins, jewelry, eyeglasses, hearing aids and any removable dental work. It is very important to inform the technologist if there is any chance of pregnancy.

Some patients who undergo an MRI in an enclosed unit may feel confined or claustrophobic making the Open MRI a better option. For added comfort, we also offer the opportunity for either a family member or friend to accompany the patient in the MRI room. All individuals entering the MRI suite must sign the pre-screening form assuring their safety in the room. On occasion, referring doctors may pre-medicate their patients who are tentative and anxious about their MRI. If the patient is not easily reassured in the Open MRI, they may want to ask their physician about a sedative to reduce anxiety.

At the Imaging Center of Lancaster, we strive to provide the most comfortable environment during and MRI exam. During the exam, please let the technologist know of any needs that you may have to make your experience as pleasant as possible.
