What is an Open MRI?
MRI allows physicians to see inside the body without surgery or the use of ionizing radiation. Using a powerful but harmless magnet, low-intensity radio waves and computer technology, MRI creates detailed images of soft tissues, muscles, nerves and bones. This progressive technology, which produces high-resolution images, enables physicians to detect developing diseases or abnormalities earlier.

The open MRI is an advanced alternative for people who have trouble tolerating the enclosed MRI, like children, claustrophobic patients and those with larger frames. Our MRI services are accredited by the American College of Radiology.

For more information about MRIs, visit our Open MRI page.

What is contrast?
Also referred to as contrast agent or contrast medium. Any internally administered substance that has a different opacity from soft tissue on radiography or computed tomography. This may be barium, iodine or in some cases water) to enhance the visibility of certain tissues. The contrast material may be swallowed or administered by enema. Before administering the contrast material the radiologist or technologist may ask whether the patient has any allergies, especially to medications or iodine, and whether the patient has a history of diabetes, asthma, a heart condition, kidney problems or thyroid conditions. These conditions may indicate a higher risk of reaction to the contrast material or potential problems eliminating the material from the patient's system after the exam.

What is barium?
Also referred to as contrast agent or contrast medium. Any internally administered substance that has a different opacity from soft tissue on radiography or computed tomography. Includes barium or water, used to make parts of the gastrointestinal tract opaque.
